As a budding farmer, I have an appreciation for what it takes to ensure a strong, stable food supply in our country. I thought planting fruit trees was a matter of sticking a sapling in the ground and making sure it had enough water. But I'm beginning to know better. People aren't the only ones who like fruit trees. Diseases, bugs, and critters like them too. So keeping fruit trees healthy while not applying toxic pesticides is a real challenge. Not to mention, you have to do a lot of research to find the right fruit tree for your soil type, weather, and other limitations (time, space, etc.). North Sky Farm is now up to about a dozen apple trees, eight peach trees, and a couple of fig, pear, and cherry trees. On my wall I have all manner of diplomas and awards. But the one I'm most proud of: Certified Orchardist. Let's hope all the training pays off.
